Write with a friend

Butterflies, a box, planes, and a jar

One exercise I love is to collaborate with a friend. One person writes five questions — “What is love?”, “What is anger?” Etc. — phrased as definitions using abstractions. Without reading the questions, the other person writes five strange and beautiful images: “two detective novels lying open on the bed”, “a jar full of smoke”,  “wind in a box”, etc. Then read them aloud for the big reveal — magic every time.
