Write a poem that draws from language you’ve written for another context: a childhood journal, a text message to your mother, a “to do” list, a lab report for Chemistry class. Use that source text as raw material, circling — quickly and decisively — the words that most interest you. Don’t think about meaning too much; don’t second guess your choices. Use these words to build a poem. You may add other words, or you may just erase everything that feels dead for you and keep only the living language. Title the poem after a work in another medium (song, film, visual art, video game) that gives you a feeling similar to that of your poem.
