Constrain yourself to one part of speech

Get a page of text in front of you. Anything. Online or print. Make sure you have a timekeeping device. In seven minutes, focus on nouns in your text. Pull them out and make a poem out of them. Add no other words. Then do the same with only verbs. Only adjectives. Adverbs. Prepositions. Pronouns.

This is a good exercise to do with a group of friends. Subdivide the group into subgroups, share out the parts of speech, write the poems collaboratively, then compare them. It is amazing how much our brains interpolate, and how compelling such poems can be.
