Lesson Introduction

Tired of trite imagery and sickly sweet words on Valentine's Day? Let's stomp on that box of chocolates! By creating an iMovie storyboard of a poem with pencil sketches, this mini-unit helps students SLOW down their recitation, learn a poem by heart, recite with emotion, and respond to poetry in multi-modal ways.

Learning Objectives

In this lesson, students will have opportunities to:

  • Use art and digital literacy to comprehend and interpret written texts.
  • Recognize how literary elements, techniques and devices enhance and shape meaning and impact.
  • Use design processes to plan, develop and create an engaging visual text to perfect intonation, volume
    and pacing as well as memorization.

Materials and Resources

To teach this lesson, you will need:

  • access to video recording software (iMovie)
  • cameras/laptops
  • class projector and speakers
  • small sheets of sketching paper
  • pencils / coloured pencils / fine sharpies
  • access to Poetry in Voice online anthology
  • peer assessment rubric
