April is poetry month and Montague high school student Berry Genge has made it to the national finals in a poetry recitation contest.
Poetry wasn’t always Nina Thach’s cup of tea. But on April 24, the 17-year-old Kildonan East Collegiate student will step on stage at the national Poetry in Voice semifinal competition to recite three poems, with a chance to win $5,000 on the line.
For some people, poetry is meant to be enjoyed aloud — and three local high school students will be travelling to a national competition this month to show how they do it.
Twenty-four high school students from across Canada have been chosen to compete in a national poetry performance competition known as Poetry in Voice, which awards $5,000 to the eventual winners and $1,000 to their school libraries.
Graduating student Brittany Huellas-Bruskiewicz clinched first place and $5,000 at the national competition in Toronto last month for her bilingual recitation while Gabrielle Nebrida-Pepin, also Grade 12, earned $1,000 for her second prize win in the English category.
Nine students from across the country have collectively won $25,000 as finalists of the 2018 Poetry In Voice competition in Toronto on April 19, 2018.
Poetry in Voice is taking place this weekend in Toronto. Elizabeth Wong is a competitor from the Toronto French School.
Hundreds of high school students are in town today for the national Poetry In Voice competition. Pujita Verma is one of three finalists, and also happens to be the new youth poet laureate for Mississauga.
