Biography:

Though the English writer Thomas Hardy (1840-1928) considered himself a poet first, he supported himself by publishing novels, such as the renowned Tess of the d’Urbervilles, Jude the Obscure, and Far From the Madding Crowd. His poetry, which he returned to later in life, was darker in tone than most Victorian poetry, and it inspired a generation of English poets in the mid-20th century.
