Biography

The son of former slaves, Paul Laurence Dunbar (1872-1906) was born in Dayton, Ohio. Dunbar published his first poem at 14 and was nationally recognized as an important intellectual and literary figure while still a young man. His poems, which he wrote in both standard English and dialect, often address the subject of racial injustice.
