Biography

The English poet, novelist, and feminist Mary Robinson (1757-1800) lived independently from her husband, who drove them into debt, and had unconcealed love affairs, most notably with King George IV. Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire (the subject of the film The Duchess) acted as Robinson’s patroness, sponsoring the publication of Robinson’s first volume of poetry, Captivity.
