Biography

Born in Kirkwood, Missouri, Marianne Moore was a major figure in the American Modernist movement. An influential editor and mentor, Moore nurtured many poets, including Elizabeth Bishop. In her later years she attained some pop-cultural notoriety as a charming eccentric, often appearing in a three-cornered hat. A devoted fan of the Brooklyn Dodgers, she threw the opening season pitch in Yankee Stadium a few years before her death.
