Biography

Born on Black Hawk Island near Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, Lorine Niedecker was influenced by the Imagist and Objectivist movements of the early 20th century and wrote about the natural world around her in a sharply individual way. Though she was in contact with the avant-garde writers of her time, she spent most of her life in rural isolation and struggled financially until late in life. She published four books of poems while alive, but her reputation has grown since her death with the publication of her collected poems and correspondence.
