Biography: 

Born into a military family in Guelph, Ontario, John McCrae (1872-1918) published his first poems while studying medicine at the University of Toronto. He served as a field surgeon for the Canadian artillery in World War I and died of pneumonia while commanding a hospital in Boulogne in 1918. He is best known for his memorial poem “In Flanders Fields.”
