Biography

Born to a wealthy family in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Gertrude Stein was an experimental writer whose work has influenced generations of poets. She was an avid collector of modern art and held salons while living in Paris that were attended by writers like Ernest Hemingway, Guillaume Apollinaire, and Ezra Pound. Her best-known books are Tender Buttons and The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas. Picasso painted her portrait
