Biography

One of the most important poets in the development of American poetry, Emily Dickinson, who was born in Amherst, Massachusetts, died virtually unknown outside her small community, leaving behind nearly 1,800 poems. It was not until the 20th century that her poems were published as she wrote them, with her distinctive use of dashes intact. Her work often captures an atmosphere of isolation and spiritual ecstasy.
