Born in Wisconsin, the American poet Ella Wheeler Wilcox (1850-1919) began publishing her direct, rhyming verse while she was still a teenager. A popular writer in her lifetime, her poem “Solitude” opens with the often-quoted lines, “Laugh, and the world laughs with you; / Weep, and you weep alone.”
