Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861) began writing as a young child and grew up to be an enormously popular poet. Her father encouraged her to write and he paid to publish her long poem The Battle of Marathon when she was only 14. At 20, she married the English poet Robert Browning, to whom she dedicated her book Sonnets from the Portuguese.
