Biography: 

Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Claudia Rankine is a poet and playwrite whose work shines a light on race and gender. She has published five books of poetry and has won several awards, including the National Book Critics Circle Award in 2014 for her book Citizen. As a child growing up in the Bronx, Rankine's mother encouraged her to recite poetry, and the first poem she ever recited was was Emily Dickinson’s “Because I Could Not Stop For Death.”
