Biography

Born in Newark, New Jersey, Allen Ginsberg had a remarkable influence on late-20th-century popular culture, inspiring not only generations of poets but also musicians like Bob Dylan. Associated with both the Beat movement and the San Francisco Renaissance, Ginsberg founded the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics with poet Anne Waldman in Denver, Colorado. His most famous poem, Howl, was published by Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s City Lights Books, and the resulting censorship trial was the subject of a recent James Franco film.
