Montreal, QC, June 14, 2017 - Poetry In Voice/Les voix de la poésie is pleased to announce a three-year partnership with the Canada Council for the Arts that will extend the reach of our organization to all parts of Canada and beyond.
As part of our ongoing work to foster a love of poetry among Canadian youth - the readers, thinkers, and leaders of tomorrow - we will appoint 15 Poet Ambassadors from among the hundreds of poets engaging in dynamic educational and community outreach across the country.
The poets will:
visit schools to spark students’ creativity through poetry reading, writing, and recitation
curate events that integrate students into their local poetry scene and engage the wider community
run workshops and discussions at poetry festivals, including the Poetry In Voice/Les voix de la poésie National Finals
leave a digital legacy on our website of videos, photos, and their best poetry teaching ideas
The annual winners of the Governor General’s Literary Award for Poetry will also become integral members of our outreach team and develop exciting resources for teachers and students.
We will create an international stage for our outstanding student reciters by founding a contest with our sister organizations in the United States, England, Ireland, and possibly Mexico, Poland, and South Africa.
Since 2010, Poetry In Voice/Les voix de la poésie has become a cultural force in Canada:
Approximately 1.4 million Canadian students have learned a poem by heart for our recitation contest.
The poems on our website (a third of which are Canadian) have been read nearly 10 million times.
Videos of our students reciting poetry have been viewed over 800,000 times.
Educators who are interested in working with their local Poet Ambassador in the 2017/18 school year can sign up on our website now. Spaces are limited.
Founded by Scott Griffin, chairman and founder of The Griffin Trust For Excellence In Poetry, Poetry In Voice is a charitable organization that encourages Canadian students to fall in love with poetry through reading, writing and recitation. In addition to running a nationwide student recitation competition, the organization also provides an anthology of classic and contemporary poems and comprehensive teaching materials at no cost.
