Raising Voices: Poetry and Performance in the Classroom

Our Educational Consultant, Liisa House, has written a fantastic article about Poetry In Voice for English Practice, the journal of the British Columbia Teachers of English Language Arts (BCTELA). You can find it starting on page 68.

In “Raising Voices: Poetry and Performance in the Classroom,” Liisa explains how the Poetry In Voice anthology and teaching materials can help students demystify poems for themselves. She shows how poetry recitation clearly fits into BC’s current and upcoming ELA curriculum, and how the contest enables students to experience poetry together.

She also shares the story of a student named Aaron, who found his voice and his place among his peers through recitation. “Back home, he’d memorized lots of things.... He knew he could do this. What he didn’t anticipate was how his classmates might experience [his recitation].”

Read the article on BCTELA’s website and share your thoughts about it on Facebook and Twitter.
