Online Semifinals

Once a student becomes a school champion, they can participate in the Online Semifinals, where students from across Canada create and submit recitation videos. Those with the top scores are invited to attend the National Finals with their teacher.

Note: A school may enter up to three students in the Online Semifinals, one per prize stream (one English champion, one Bilingual champion, and one French champion).

Students prepare differently for the Online Semifinals depending on their chosen prize stream:

If you’re competing in the English or French prize stream, you must recite three poems for the Online Semifinals. One of your poems must have 25 lines or fewer

You don’t need to meet any other criteria with your poem selections.

If you’re competing in the Bilingual stream, you must recite two poems at the Online Semifinals:

  1. One poem in English
  2. One poem in French

You don’t need to meet any other criteria with your poem selections.

Steps for the Online Semifinals:

  1. Sign or have a parent/guardian sign a permission form.
  2. Film each recitation separately according to our specifications.
  3. A teacher uploads your permission form and recitation videos to their Poetry In Voice account by our deadline.
  4. Judges from across the country evaluate the recitations.
  5. You and your teacher are notified by email about whether or not you’re advancing to the National Finals.

You can contact Poetry In Voice for general feedback about your recitations. Because spring is a very busy time of year for us, please allow several weeks for a response.
