1775-1834

Biography

Born in London, the English poet and critic Charles Lamb (1775-1834) was overshadowed by his friends Samuel Taylor Coleridge and William Wordsworth. Unlike the emotionally driven work of his peers, Lamb’s poetry is more conservative in style. Lamb’s life was marked by tragedy, as he and his sister — who in a fit of agitation stabbed her mother to death — both suffered from mental illness.
